About Rajaji Tiger Reserve
Rajaji National Park, located in Uttarakhand, India, is a significant wildlife conservation landscape representing the rich biodiversity of the Shiwalik hills and Himalayan foothills. The park was established in 1983 by merging three wildlife sanctuaries — Rajaji, Motichur and Chilla. It was named in honour of Late Shri C. Rajagopalachari, popularly known as “Rajaji,” a distinguished freedom fighter and the first Governor-General of independent India.
The national park covers 820.42 sq. km. In 2015, an additional 255.63 sq. km of adjoining reserved forest was incorporated as a buffer zone, bringing the total area to approximately 1,075 sq. km and resulting in the designation of Rajaji Tiger Reserve under the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Situated along the Shiwalik ranges and their foothills, the reserve encompasses a diverse landscape of forested hills, rugged ridges, deep ravines, river valleys and grasslands. It extends across the Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal districts of Uttarakhand and the adjoining Saharanpur region. Its proximity to Dehradun, Haridwar and the yoga city Rishikesh further enhances its ecological importance, supporting regional biodiversity, watershed protection and environmental balance.
The park's geography is shaped by the Ganges River, the Chilla River and numerous seasonal streams descending from the Shiwalik ridges. The Rajaji and Motichur forest areas are contiguous, while the Chilla area lies to the southeast, separated by the Ganges and Chilla rivers. Many seasonal streams remain dry for much of the year but transform into fast-flowing torrents during the monsoon, creating distinctive riverine habitats.
Rajaji National Park supports a mosaic of forest types, ranging from semi-evergreen and deciduous forests to mixed broad-leaved woodland and Terai grasslands. Its vegetation falls within the Indus-Ganges Monsoon Forest type, with majestic Sal (Shorea robusta) forests dominating large areas. This varied landscape provides important habitats for diverse wildlife and reinforces the reserve's role in biodiversity conservation across the Shiwalik landscape.
Rajaji National Park is open to visitors only from 15th November to 15th June (Chilla, Ranipur, Mohand(Chillawali), Motichur ranges).
