Best Time to Visit Rajaji National Park: Seasons, Zones and Timings
The best time to visit Rajaji National Park, zone by zone: opening dates, Jhilmil Jheel's earlier season, safari timings and why winter suits birders.
The best time to visit Rajaji National Park depends on which safari zone you choose. Most of the jeep safari zones follow one season, Jhilmil Jheel follows another, and Gohri Range is open for most of the year. This guide sets out the opening periods, the morning and evening entry timings, and what each part of the season offers, using the figures published for each zone.
## When Rajaji National Park is open
Chilla, Motichur, Ranipur and Mohand–Chillawali are generally open from 15 November to 15 June. They remain closed during the monsoon season. Opening and closing dates can move depending on Forest Department regulations, weather conditions and local management decisions, so check the dates for your trip before you make travel plans.
Many of Rajaji's seasonal streams stay dry for much of the year but turn into fast-flowing torrents during the monsoon.
### Jhilmil Jheel has a different season
Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve, on the left bank of the Ganga in Haridwar District, is generally open for safari tourism during the October to June season. Its published entry timings begin on 15 October, a month before the main zones open, which makes it an option for visitors travelling in late October or early November.
### Gohri Range is open for most of the year
Gohri Range is generally open throughout the year except during August and September. Even so, year-round opening should not be treated as guaranteed. Monsoon conditions, route-specific permissions and Forest Department regulations can still affect safaris there.
## Morning and evening safari timings
The main zones run a morning slot and an afternoon/evening slot. The entry timings change three times during the season:
- 15 November to 15 February: morning 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM, afternoon 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM
- 16 February to 15 April: morning 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM, afternoon 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM
- 16 April to 15 June: morning 5:30 AM to 7:00 AM, afternoon 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM
Jhilmil Jheel publishes its own entry periods:
- 15 October to 31 January: morning 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM, evening 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM
- 1 February to 31 March: morning 6:30 AM to 9:00 AM, evening 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM
- 1 April to 30 June: morning 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM, evening 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Gohri Range lists indicative safari timings of 6:30 AM to 9:00 AM in the morning and 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM in the evening.
A typical jeep safari lasts about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the zone, route and conditions. Plan to reach the gate at least 20 minutes before the reporting or last-entry time printed on your permit or booking confirmation. Timings can be revised by the Forest Department, so the time on your permit is the one to follow.
### Morning or evening: which slot to choose
Early morning safaris can offer good chances to watch wildlife, particularly when animals are moving along forest tracks and open areas. For birdwatchers, early morning is generally a productive period because bird activity is often higher during the cooler hours. At Gohri, both early morning and late afternoon can be good times, when animals are more active.
The morning is also when the Chilla elephant safari runs. It is an early-morning experience of about 1 to 1.5 hours, subject to availability and Forest Department arrangements.
The afternoon slot suits visitors who cannot manage a very early start, especially later in the season when morning entry moves to 5:30 AM. Whichever slot you pick, sightings are never guaranteed. They depend on animal movement, season, weather and habitat conditions.
## Best time to visit Rajaji National Park by season
### November to February: winter birdwatching
Winter is particularly rewarding for bird watchers. Rajaji has more than 300 recorded bird species, including resident birds, winter migrants and altitudinal visitors, and winter brings additional migratory species to suitable habitats, wetlands and water bodies. At Jhilmil Jheel, winter coincides with the presence of many migratory birds in the wider Jhilmil–Ganga landscape, and a Forest Department preliminary checklist records 238 bird species in the reserve.
Mornings can be cool in winter, so carry a light jacket for an early safari.
### October to April at Jhilmil Jheel
For Jhilmil Jheel, the October to April period is particularly attractive if you want pleasant weather, wetland landscapes and birdwatching. Conditions for wildlife photography there vary with season, water availability, temperature and animal movement.
### Outside winter
Bird watching does not stop when the migrants leave. Other seasons offer chances to see resident birds, breeding activity and seasonal changes in bird behaviour. The best time for you depends on the species you hope to see, the weather and permitted access.
## Book early for weekends and holidays
Safari vehicles and permits are limited, and demand can be higher than the number of vehicles available. Advance booking is recommended for weekends, public holidays, winter holidays and other peak travel periods, especially if you want a particular date or the morning slot.
